Ohio GOP Passes Gerrymandered State Legislative Maps - Again

Columbus, OH - This evening, the Republican-controlled Ohio Redistricting Commission voted along party lines to unconstitutionally gerrymander the state legislative maps - again. These adopted maps meet neither the state constitutional requirements nor the explicit order from the Supreme Court about new maps.

“The Ohio Redistricting Commission just squandered a second chance to do right by Ohioans and to deliver – as ordered by the Ohio Supreme Court – the fair maps that we deserve,” said Katy Shanahan, Ohio State Director for All On The Line. “In an appalling move, the Republican Commissioners have made clear that they lack respect not only for our state constitution, but also for the state Supreme Court’s order and for our democracy. What happened here is simple: Republican Commissioners thumbed their noses at both the people of Ohio and the state’s highest court,” Shanahan continued.

“And while the Commission failed to provide a single opportunity for meaningful public dialogue about the proposed and ultimately adopted maps, more than 850 Ohioans from every corner of the state submitted public comments demanding fair maps - all of which, if even seen, were patently ignored by the Republican Commissioners,” Shanahan said.
