The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

The American people’s right to free and fair elections is under attack.

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will curb these efforts by restoring essential voting rights protections that the Supreme Court gutted in its disastrous Shelby County decision in 2013. The bill would protect our right to vote both by mail and in person, as well as prevent discriminatory policies directed at minority voters.

“The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would help protect against future voter suppression laws. That’s why I’ve been calling on Congress to do the right thing and protect what so many generations fought so hard to secure.”

President Barack Obama

Take Action:

In 2013, five Supreme Court justices voted to gut the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This triggered the collapse of one of the most effective voter protection bills in U.S. history. Now, almost a decade later, more and more states are passing laws that make it harder to vote.

These restrictive laws are disproportionately affecting voters of color. Passing the John Lewis Voting Rights act would put an end to these disparities and cement a consensus that voting rights are inalienable in the United States.

“John believed that every American should be able to make real their sacred right to vote. He knew the power that our voices and our votes hold – a power that no person or party should undermine. This bill is a part of John’s legacy. It’s time to do whatever it takes-including reforming or eliminating the filibuster- to pass both the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act.
