AOTL: Colorado’s Preliminary Legislative Maps Must Reflect Colorado’s Diverse Communities of Interest

Coloradans Deserve Fair Maps That Follow Constitutional Criteria

The public comment period on communities of interest for Colorado’s Independent Legislative Redistricting Commission ends today, marking the conclusion of the first instance for public participation in this decade’s state legislative redistricting process.

“Amendment Z passed in 2018 with overwhelming support from voters across Colorado and presented an unprecedented opportunity for the Legislative Redistricting Commission to hear from diverse communities across Colorado on how they wanted to be represented in the legislature. Communities of interest are an important criteria that the Legislative Redistricting Commission must consider and apply as it goes about developing and approving maps,” said Marco Dorado, AOTL Colorado State Director.

“It is now incumbent on the redistricting commission staff to draft a preliminary map that reflects the public comments on communities of interest collected during this period specifically as it relates to members of Colorado's AAPI, Black, Indigenous, and Latino communities. All On The Line Colorado has worked tirelessly to inform as many Coloradans as possible about the redistricting process and we will continue this work in upcoming public hearings and beyond to ensure the final state legislature maps reflect the diverse communities of interest across our state,” Dorado continued.
