Statement from All On The Line: Florida Legislature Fails To Announce Committees

Floridians deserve a fair & transparent redistricting process

Today, the Florida House made a routine announcement regarding committee assignments for the 2021 legislative session, just as the Senate did earlier this month. What is critically missing from both of these announcements are assignments to the committees who will lead the upcoming redistricting process.

“Waiting for a later date to assign legislators to these redistricting committees means there will be less transparency and time for public input during the redistricting process. Given that the last redistricting process unfolded behind closed doors in the legislature, Floridians need to know that this time will be different. There is too much at stake to wait on naming these committee assignments,” said Katie Vicsik, Florida State Director for All On The Line.

“At this point in time during past redistricting cycles, legislators were already meeting and creating tools that could incorporate input from Floridians. Currently it is unclear if citizens will be able to have input throughout the map drawing process. The people deserve a legislature that is prepared to not only take public input into consideration, but also implement it,” Vicsik continued.
